System design is the most delicate phase of its lifecycle. Why? Because, in the best case, the final needs are not deeply known by anyone, neither by the end customer nor by the designer. A good designer must follow an iterative process, during which, at each iteration, the level of uncertainty decreases regarding what needs to be actually developed.

The only constant in software development is the change of requirements. The good designer must design the system that serves “today,” knowing that it will need to become the system that will serve “tomorrow” without being rewritten. Creating a system with unqualified personnel means spending; defining a flexible project with valid designers means investing.

We break down our iterative design process into the following standard phases, each of which includes the production of one or more documents describing the input and output of each phase:

  • Analysis of specifications: involves interviews with all stakeholders.

  • Feasibility study: where necessary, this includes creating specific prototypes for low-level individual features.

  • Logical-functional design: defines what the system will do and, especially, what it will not do. This phase involves regular meetings with the system’s end-users.

  • Sizing: defines the system’s non-functional requirements.

  • Testing: includes the creation of functional, interface, and integration prototypes.
